City calls on residents to participate in reimagining Main Road in Rondebosch

The City is calling on residents and stakeholders to collaborate with us on a new vision for Main Road in the Rondebosch central business district. The intention is to revitalise the section of Main Road between Belmont Road and Woolsack Road, and we are encouraging the public to submit comments and proposals by Monday, 29 June 2026.
Main Road (M4) is a key feature of the Rondebosch CBD. It developed over time and is one of Cape Town’s historic transport routes that connects surrounding suburbs. It facilitates movement through the business area for vehicles and pedestrians, delivery bikes and public transport users, and is a hub of economic and social activity for residents, students, and visitors to the area.
The section of Main Road between Belmont Road and Woolsack Road features the Baxter Theatre to the north, Rustenburg Junior School, residences for students, small shops, educational facilities, restaurants, and the Rondebosch Main Shopping Centre to the south. The road has changed tremendously over the past decade with an increase in new development, changes in land use, and more visitors and activities.
‘Given these changes, there is a need to reimagine Main Road so that it can be more vibrant, safer for all users, and becomes a space that integrates multiple activities. We want it to become a pleasant destination that encourages social and commercial activity, and we need residents’ help to get there,’ said the City’s Deputy Mayor and Mayoral Committee Member for Spatial Planning and Environment, Alderman Eddie Andrews.
Potential interventions include improvements to make the area safer for pedestrians, to add elements that will make the public spaces more inviting and useful, the rationalisation of parking for cars and delivery motorbikes, and traffic calming measures, such as raised pedestrian crossings, bump-outs and special paving.
The City’s Urban Planning and Design Department is working on this new vision for Main Road, and the local community is invited and encouraged to collaborate with officials.
‘Those who live and work in Rondebosch, and frequent this area have firsthand knowledge of the challenges and opportunities. We want to hear from you and are eager to receive your proposals on possible interventions to ensure Main Road is vibrant, attractive, and in service of the local community,’ said Alderman Andrews.
